Corten Steel (sometimes known as weathered steel) is a group of steel alloys that are often used in outdoor construction. Corten Steel was designed to eliminate the need for painting and if left outside, exposed to the elements, they will develop a rusted appearance in just a few months.
A588 corten weathering steel sheet is a high strength material designed to develop a rust-like surface patina if left unfinished, eliminating the need to paint the material and protecting the material from further corrosion. A588 corten weathering steel is intended for welded, bolted, or riveted construction and common applications include outdoor sculptures, building exteriors, electrical power poles, railcars, and other structures where high strength and enhanced corrosion resistance are required.
ASTM A588 standard (also called ASME SA588)specifies high strength low alloy ASTM A588 weathering steel Grades for structural purposes, it includes 4 grades: A588 Grade A, A588 Grade B, A588 Grade C, A588 Grade K. It also exhibits a high resistance to stress related corrosion, as well as excellent protection against corrosion cracking and pitting.
