ASTM A312 TP321 Seamless Stainless Pipe Ti
The grade 321 stainless steel pipe is austenitic steel that is stabilized with titanium. The titanium stabilization provides the material with good corrosion resistance. The Titanium also limits the usage as welding consumable because Titanium does not transfer well over an electric arc welding procedure. So working with heat has limitations on this product.
However, annealing is available as a means of treating this material for extra corrosion resistance. Annealing is performed by heating up the material up to 1065 degrees Celsius and then water quenching it. This provides maximum corrosion resistance to the products made up this material. In addition to the annealing procedure, the hot bending operation could be performed in the range of 950 -1100 degrees Celsius.
This is not actually a heat treatment to increase any mechanical properties but soon after the hot bending, annealing is performed to make sure that the corrosion resistance properties are restored. The annealing also provides the material with less intergranular corrosion during welding. An oxide layer forms on the surface of the AISI 321 pipe after annealing which acts as a coating against oxidation reactions. Some types of finishing are also available to protect the surface in addition to the heat treatment.
