Advantage and Applications

254 SMO is an austenitic stainless steel that offers impact toughness and resistance to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion and chloride stress corrosion and cracking. It has a strength that almost doubles the 300 series of stainless steels and is often more cost effective than the more expensive nickel-alloy and titanium or tantalum materials.


254 SMO is an austenitic stainless steel grade, particularly well suited to applications involving the marine environment. In fact, the austenitic microstructure is a reason for its high impact strength not only at room temperature, but also cryogenic temperatures. Hence the 254 SMO Cryogenic Globe Valves is a good fit for those applications where the temperatures are extremely low. They have a high mechanical strength even down to  -196 C. In addition to its excellent performance in cryogenic settings, the ASTM A182 SMO 254 Ball Valve can sustain very well at elevated temperatures. The high content of nickel in conjunction with the heat treatment performed on the SMO 254 Low Pressure Diaphragm Valve makes them well suited to withstand high temperature applications, especially as a part of heat exchangers, ballast water systems, cooling water systems, firefighting systems etc, that belong in marine environments. Their chemistry also makes UNS S31254 SMO 254 Check Valve a good fit for the pulp and paper industry. Conventional steel grades get decayed in the presence of the highly corrosive chemicals seen in the pulp and paper industry.
